Thessaloniki International Film Festival, a cornerstone of Greek and European cinema, traces its roots back to 1960 when it was inaugurated as the “Greek Film Week.” Initially conceived as a platform to showcase the best of Greek cinema, it was organized by the “Techni” Macedonian Art Society.

In 1966, the festival underwent its first name change to “Thessaloniki Greek Film Festival,” solidifying its connection to the city while maintaining its national focus. However, a transformative shift occurred in 1991 when the festival adopted the name “Thessaloniki International Film Festival,” signaling its ambition to become a global cinematic platform.

Under the artistic direction of Michel Dimopoulos, the festival embraced a more international orientation in 1992. The introduction of the “New Horizons” program, curated by Dimitris Eipides, was instrumental in establishing the festival’s international credentials.

Over the ensuing decades, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival continued to evolve, expanding its programming to encompass documentaries, short films, and retrospectives.
